egypt [1] = "One of the oldest mosques in 'Islamic' Cairo. The massive parasols open out to shade hundreds of people for praying on a Friday."

egypt [3] = "The Step Pyramid at Saqqara, near Cairo. The first pyramid ever built in Egypt and the oldest stone structure in the world (2650 BC)."
egypt [4] = "The first true pyramid (called the 'Red Pyramid, around 2500 BC'), built at Dahshur. You can climb the steps up to the entrance and then crawl down a long narrow sloping shaft to the huge burial chambers inside, which are actually below ground level. Very impressive!"

egypt [12] = "Went to the Egyptian Museumn in the centre of Cairo. Lots of impressive stuff, particularly the mummies of a dozen famous pharos."
egypt [13] = "Reading in the museumn grounds. Just before we got the overnight train from Cairo to Aswan. Woke with the Nile flowing outside the train window and arrived at 8.30 am."
egypt [14] = "Got a nice hotel and then went over to an island in the Nile to look at more ruins etc. This view is looking upstream from the island towards the Aswan Dams."
egypt [15] = "In the midday heat there wasn't much you could do except keep cool by the pool, with great views up and down the Nile! Even in the shade you got a really hot wind from the desert."
egypt [16] = "First evening in Aswan, went for a fellucca ride around the island, watching the sunset and stretching into darkness, so these guys could charge more for a longer trip. B******* but expected!"
egypt [17] = "Next day took a very early trip (3 hours drive) in convoy down to Abul Simbel, only 40km from Sudan. Amazing temple cut out of a mountain (built 1274-1234 BC) by Ramses II, originally looking over the Nile. The whole temple and hill-side were cut up and moved in the 1970s to save them from the new Lake Nasser!"
egypt [18] = "Inside are massive rooms with huge statue columns and several other rooms leading off. All covered in very well preserved reliefs showing Ramses II in battle."
egypt [19] = "Another temple complex, this one at Philae built around 200 BC, on an island in the Nile. Moved to a higher island after being partially submerged for 60 years by the old Aswan dam."
egypt [20] = "Next day we eventually set out on our 2 days and 2 nights on a felucca, sailing down the Nile with 7 other tourists (2 Danish, 3 Yugoslavian, 2 Korean) plus captain and 'cabin-boy' who did all the hard work and cooking."
egypt [21] = "Feluccas are traditional Nile sailing boats with a single large sail. Everything seems to be held together with dodgy bits of rope but they seem to get around OK, even in quite strong winds."
egypt [22] = "Our boat was one of the larger ones and was made up into one huge bed for a very relaxing trip."
egypt [23] = "The number-two crew hard at work, stowing the sail by lashing the lower boom to the upper boom/mast."

egypt [25] = "After leaving the felucca, we were driven to see the 'Temple of Horus' at Edfu, the most complete Egyptian temple, completed in only 57BC by Cleopatra's father."

egypt [27] = "On to Luxor, capital of the New Kingdom, and the largest temple complex at Karnak. Sarah is standing by the obelisk of Hatshepsut (Egypt's most famous female pharaoh) which is 29.5 metres tall."
egypt [28] = "Next day went to Valley of the Kings, in which 62 tombs have been discovered. Most recently Tutankhamun in 1924."
egypt [29] = "Very remote, barren desert with no signs of ancient Egypt on the surface."
egypt [30] = "Amazing painted tombs. This one is of Ramses VI, which was raided only 20 years after his burial, but still contains remains of his sarcophagus (coffin)."
egypt [31] = "Fantastic artwork and hieroglyphs. The most interesting thought is that they were never intended to be seen by human eyes, but only to guide the dead pharaoh to the afterlife and provide him with everything he needed there."

egypt [36] = "Went diving with the close supervision of a fellow Brit, Spencer. Fantastic combination of weightlessness, being able to breath underwater and seeing some amazing coral and fish."
egypt [37] = "Windsurfing is another activity that's much nicer to do where it's hot. Got much better over a few hours than I was before."
egypt [38] = "Walked up Mount Sinai in the night and slept at the top. Then we were awoken by the noise of 400 tourists as they arrived to see the sunrise. You go all this way to get a decent night's sleep...!"
